Die Hard (1998)

An all time classic. Whether for Christmas or at any other time. Arguably the defining action blockbuster of the 80s. Quotable and sheer class. Yip-eee-kay-aaa 5/5

Monsters University (2013)

Had to watch it a few times to appreciate it and now I think it's almost?! As good as the first one. Great back story and very Pixar! 4/5

Frozen (2013)

Saw this in 3D at the cinema, kids loved it. But then after you watch it a few times you realise it's pretty crap. 3/5

Elysium (2013)

Could have been good. The story has been done countless times before, the whole film is a let down after 20 minutes. Shit. 2/5

Captain Phillips (2013)

Tom Hanks shows again why he's arguably the best actor around. He carries this film and it's a good job he does. Tense throughout but long winded and gets quite repetitive. 3/5

Red 2 (2013)

Very much like the first one, but sadly not as good. Plenty of action, a few laughs but borderline average. 3/5

Despicable Me 2 (2013)

Funny, entertaining and a great family film. Minions are a staple of any good movie. Steve Carell is class.4/5

Prisoners (2013)

Probably the most intense 2 hours I've seen, building up to some amazing twist and then...bang...uber shit Hollywood ending. What was great suddenly became average at best. 3/5

Trance (2013)

Danny Boyle returns after the Olympic opening ceremony and delivers something that was never going to compete.  Maybe that was his plan, something low key.  Basically that dude from Wanted steals a painting from Vincent Cassell but can't remember stuff after being hit on the head, so he visits a sexy  hypnotist to figure it all out.  It has some good points and it's not that bad, but it's no James Bond jumps from helicopter with the Queen type stuff. 3/5

Broken City (2013)

Average at best.  Ex-cop Mark Whalberg gets set up by evil mayor Russel Crowe, it has some clever (isn) moments but for me, Russ can't deliver since Gladiator and Mark Whalberg doesn't convince me very often.  So it kinda just floats along with the predictable. 2/5

Up in the Air (2009)

I appreciate this film even more now I have the jet setter work lifestyle. Very funny, sincere and a good watch. 4/5

Pacific Rim (2013)

Maybe the best CGI I have ever seen (so far).  Flawless visuals.  Stunning. Shame about the shit story, acting and the bits in between..but wow, the effects!!! 3/5

Now You See Me (2013)

Much better than expected. It's like Oceans Eleven meets Prestige meets Inside Man.  Sharp, clever, witty and good fun.  Leaves you guessing, neat twist and an impressive cast. 4/5

Ip Man (2008)

Nothing to do with wifi routers, but arguably the best kung fu film I have ever seen.  For me, it's better than Enter the Dragon, and that's a bold statement. Makes all that crouching tiger shit look lame 5/5

After Earth (2013)

A vehicle for Will Smith to help his kids, I get it.  Some good ideas and father son chemistry but it's average at best. 3/5

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

Sadly as crap as you'd guessed with no surprises. The action comes thick and fast and we still love John McClain but this is no Yippee-ki-yay.  Who's fucking stupid now Haans?  Me for watching this shit. 2/5

The World's End (2013)

Typical Pegg/Frost affair, think Shaun but with robots.  Fun, funky, crazy and damn right British.  I liked it, others won't.  The final installment of the Cornetto trilogy. 4/5

Shockingly poor, and all I can see now is Hot Shots Part Deux. A dire sequel like Rocky III. 2/5

First Blood (1982)

Even now I can see what all the fuss was about. I saw this on beta max in the 80s, loved it then, love it now. Class. 4/5

Iron Man 3 (2013)

Weak plot, poor storyline and awful direction however the usual cast carry it through.  Just watch it for what it is.  More of the winning Iron Man formula, just with more suits, more explosions and bizarre exploding bad guys including Mike from Neighbours. 3/5

Star Trek Into the Darkness (2013)

Not as good as the first, and more of the same but what the heck, it was a good watch.  Big effects, good lead characters.  4/5

Pain & Gain (2013)

Not what I expected but entertaining for the simple fact it's a true story and an unbelievable one at that. Having read the true story on Wikipedia after watching I realise the film is better than I first thought. 4/5

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013)

Heard good things about this, and it felt in parts like a Farelli/Cohen type affair mixed with Dodgeball and Blades of Glory.  Jim Carey was awesome, but unfortunately his character was not used enough.  Average, but not magic. 3/5

The Conjuring (2013)

Fans of this type of camcorder horror making will lap it. It screams of Amityville and many other classics but it does have some scary moments.3/5

Scary Movie 5 (2013)

Oh dear! This is as bad as you would expect. It has one or two gags that are genuinely funny but not enough to carry this film. But I like the franchise so why not just go with it. 2/5

Oblivion (2013)

It's like Wall-E meets District 9 meets Space Odyssey.  And to be honest, not as good as either of them.  The FX are interesting and it has its own visual style.  It's baron, isolated and Tom Cruise is always pretty solid in whatever he does.  Worth a watch but does not live up to the excitement. 3/5

Jaws 3 (1983)

Arguably the worst effects in a Hollywood film. The 3D is so stuck on it doesn't actually move! The green screen bleeds and it's awful. The film is shockingly bad but the effects...well...the worst I've seen 1/5

Side Effects (2013)

Slow moving and you see the twist coming too early on. If you are slow at guessing twists you'll love it but otherwise it just doesn't cut it. The director should just make another Oceans.3/5

Parker (2013)

Starts as a reasonable Statham staple then looses it half way through. I have no idea what J Lo was doing in this. 2/5

The Last Stand (2013)

Old school action thriller. It's like the Expendables meets the Wild West. It's cheesy, badly acted but it's still Arnie. Watch it for some mindless entertainment and explosions only 2/5

End of Watch (2012)

Excellent documentary style film starting Donnie Darko and his Mexican cop partner. The acting is class and the on screen bromance is awesome. Fresh, original and exciting.4/5

Jack Reacher (2012)

Starts promising with an intriguing plot line and then nose bombs at "the car chase". It never really picks up after that. Tom Cruise is good as usual but the whole film misfires with the whole civilian superhero thing it tried to portrait.3/5

Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

Without doubt a terrible excuse for a film. Probably the worst Jaws film of them all. There's nothing more to say about this.1/5

Room 237 (2012)

As a former media student I understand media symbolism and Mise en Scene but this documentary is way off. Attributing blatant continuity errors to the directors intentional genius misses the mark and clutches at straws.2/5

The Da Vinci Code (2006)

I can't believe it's 7 years old already! It's one if those clever stories with puzzles, twists, multiple story lines and of course, Tom Hanks. What lets it down is how linear it is. And at the end of the film you ask what the whole Church Albino was all about? Pointless plot line. Good but not amazing.4/5

Not Another Teen Movie (2001)

A guilty pleasure. A likeable spoof in a similar vain to Scary Movie. Shows its age a bit now but what the hell. "Janie Briggs has got a gun".3/5

Toy Story 3 (2010)

It's better after a few watches. And I prefer it to TS2.In parts it's genius,others are sad and slightly morbid but it's beautiful to watch and the characters are all on top form.4/5

The Paperboy (2012)

I expected more from Lee Daniels (Precious) and up until the end it was watchable and intriguing.  Nicole Kidman orgasms telepathically courtesy of John Cussack and Zac Efron finally escaped his "High School" typecast. And none of this put me off.  But the ending destroyed what was left of a decent film.  3/5

Salt (2010)

A decent female Bourne style affair, Angelina nails it and its a half decent film which is let down by the ending. It could have scored higher but it trails towards the finish and the finish is lame.3/5
